San Diego Festival Coming Soon
The more we inspect, scrutinize, examine and measure
the campus grounds at Southwestern College, the
more we all feel very comfortable that the San Diego
Latino Book & Family Festival has found an excellent
new home.
We hope those of you in the Southern California area
will join us this coming May 15-16 for the 5th Annual
San Diego Festival. Southwestern College is located in
Chula Vista at 900 Otay Lakes Road (click here for map) and boasts a
truly multi-cultural student body. Of the 19,000
students, 58% are Hispanic with an additional 23%
either African American, Filipino and/or Asian. For
those of you considering exhibiting at this Festival
there are still some great booth locations available.
Look for the floor plan on the San Diego Festival City
Page at www.lbff.us/home/schedule/san-diego/2004/index.htm or click here.
Attendees at this year's event will see the first of the
Folklórico Challenge USA competitions that will
be an integral part of all our Festivals. There are still
some spots open for any interested group. Regulations
and registration forms are available at the
Folklórico Challenge USA web page at http://www.lbff.us/fcusa/index.htm
or here.
Also scheduled for the event is Julian Nava, who will
discuss his book, My Mexican-American Journey, a personal history of the
first and only Mexican-American ambassador of the
United States to Mexico. Additionally, Diana Guerrero,
author and animal trainer will give a demonstration of
her abilities.

Open A Book |
 |
Open A Book is a scholastic project that
provides classroom libraries to participating schools.
At each of our Festivals, the area school with the
highest Festival attendance over the course of the
weekend, including students, parents and teachers, will
receive seven classroom sets of the Latino Festival
Family Library: a series of 12 award winning books
that would make a great addition to any home or
classroom.
Once a school has pre-registered, it is also very
important for the students, teachers and parents of
the participating schools to make sure and do an on-
site registration at the Information Booth upon arrival
at the Festival. Depending on the success of local book
drives, many early arriving students will be given a
free book as they register at each Festival.

News About Our Producer |
 |
The new season of American Family,
starring Latino Book & Family Festival producer,
Edward James Olmos,
starts Sunday April 4th, on most local PBS stations.
This season American Family - Journey of
Dreams follows the Gonzalez clan as they
celebrate the wedding of one son while confronting
their worst fears as another goes off to war. Also
starring Constance Marie, Yancey Arias, Jesse Borrego,
Patricia Velasquez, Kate del Castillo and Raquel Welch,
with special guest stars Esai Morales, Lynn Whitfield
and Rachel Ticotin, and special appearances by Sonia
Braga, the second season juxtaposes the Gonzalez
family's story against the broad sweep of
contemporary history. The story interweaves the
Gonzalez' courageous escape from the Mexican
Revolution to seek a better life in America with the
sacrifices the family made in the 1990s to send their
first-born son to medical school and the consequences
of those sacrifices as seen through the prism of war in
Iraq to reveal how their past informs their future.
American Family - Journey of Dreams
was created by Gregory Nava and is produced
by his company, El Norte Productions, and KCET/
Hollywood, in association with The Greenblatt Janollari
Studio and Fox Television Studios. Underwriters:
Johnson & Johnson, The American Legacy Foundation,
Public Television Viewers, PBS and the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting.
