Barnes & Noble Expands Their Sponsorship of Festival

Barnes & Noble Booksellers has been a sponsor at our Houston Latino Book & Family Festival since its inception in 2002. During the past three years they have hosted many authors for autograph sessions in their sponsor pavilion including Sandra Cisneros, Mar=EDa Antonietta Collins, Cheech Marin, Edward James Olmos, Giselle Blondet and George Lopez. Over the course of their three year involvement with the Festival, Barnes & Noble's insight into the reading tastes of the Latino community has grown. They displayed-and sold-considerably more children's books in 2003 than the previous year. In 2004 they spread out over 1,500 square feet of exhibit area to display the largest selection of books in English and Spanish in the Houston Festival's history.

After three years of successful events in Houston, Barnes & Noble is expanding their participation to include the Latino Book & Family Festivals in Los Angeles (October 22-23) and Chicago (November 12-13) as well as a return for the 4th Annual Houston Latino Book & Family Festival that kicks off our 2005 Festival Tour on October 1-2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Thanks Barnes & Noble, it's great to be working with such an committed, concerned partner.

    About the Producer
Festival producer Edward James Olmos has recently relocated to Vancouver to start production on his second season of Battlestar Gallactica, starring as Commander William Adama. With the current season winding down over the next couple of weeks look for new episodes on the SciFi Channel as soon as this Summer.

Mr. Olmos has also started initial planning on one of his dream projects that in Hollywood parlance can be considered to be in the "pre-production" stage. Based on true events that took place in 1968 during the Vietnam War, the project will bring to life the story of Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez and his courageous actions while under heavy fire. As most of you know, M. Sgt. Benavidez is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for rescuing eight of his comrades while under heavy fire. Benavidez, a half-Yaqui Indian, half-Mexican orphan, fought his way out of the bigotry of South Texas to serve with the Army's elite - the Special Forces. In February, 1981, President Regan awarded him the Medal of Honor. If you are looking for the definition of courage, this story will take you on a journey that will guide you in the right direction. Mr. Olmos has spent over fifteen years developing and structuring this account of heroism. (Thanks to Leo Zamora at Olmos Productions for his input on this story.)

Look for updates on this project over the coming months in this section of Noticias Del Festival.
