Thousands of Midwesterners Brave the Elements to Attend Chicago Festival
With more than a little trepidation we headed into a
brand new venue over a cold and snowing
Thanksgiving weekend to put on the 6th Annual
Chicago Latino Book & Family Festival. We are happy
to announce a complete success all around. Great
crowds (close to 30,000) came and stayed to enjoy
four separate stages of entertainment, activities,
seminars, speakers and dance competition. Unity
School in Cicero proved to be a most accommodating
venue and should be a great home for the Festival next
year as well. Its spacious gymnasium, cafeteria and
common areas adapted perfectly to our Festival needs.
Our thanks to Cicero School District 99 and Cicero
Town President Ramiro Gonzalez.
Festival Producer Edward
James Olmos proved true to
his word of visiting all the Festivals he missed last
year, when filming on both Battlestar
Galactica and
American Family made travel impossible,
by appearing
at his third straight Festival after Los Angeles and
Houston.
As always Festival hosts Rose and Zeke Montes of Tele
Guia de Chicago and their team did an excellent job of
coordination so the Festival ran smoothly for
participant and attendee alike.

A Festival in a Mall - and It Works |
 |
A typically warm Southern California mid-December
weekend welcomed us to the Carousel Mall in San
Bernardino for the 5th Annual Inland Empire Latino
Book & Family Festival. The Folklorico Challenge USA
provided large crowds as this exciting year-long
competition drew to a close. Look for more information
on the National Championships bringing together the
regional winners from San Diego, Phoenix, Houston,
Chicago and the Inland Empire to be held in Los
Angeles in June in this newsletter soon.
Once again out thanks go out to the Inland Empire
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for their co-hosting
job. It has always been a pleasure to put this event on
in this growing, important and often over-looked Latino
market.

Latino Literacy Now Can Use Your Car Donation |
 |
With tax laws regarding writing off the charitable
donation of your used vehicle changing after this
month, there is no better time to donate that un-used
vehicle to our non-profit organization. You get the
write off and the dollars generated by the eventual
sale of your vehicle helps fund our organization.
We have made it a very simple process. Log onto our
home page and on the right hand side, please
click on the "Donate A Car"
logo.
Once at the
car
donation site you will be directed to fill out an online
form. At the bottom of that form please note the
question: Would you like to participate in
directing a portion of the proceeds from your donation
to the charity of your choice? Please answer
yes and then
make sure to indicate "Latino Literacy Now" as your
charity of choice.

Latino Literacy Now Announces 2005 Festival Tour |
 |
Over the course of the past eight years we have been
approached by numerous city officials, organizations
and concerned citizens from across the country asking
about holding a Latino Book & Family Festival in their
community. In our zeal to accommodate these
requests we have perhaps grown a bit too fast.
So in 2005 in order to do what we do well even better,
we will be concentrating our efforts on our three large
events in the key Latino markets of Houston, Los
Angeles and Chicago.
However, future expansion is being planned with an
eye to serving geographic sections of the country such
as Northern California (San Jose/San Francisco) and
the Northeast (New York City). Currently we are
planning expanding into the Dallas/Ft. Worth market in
the Spring of 2006 with Raiz Public Relations and the
Cities of Dallas & Ft. Worth as our co-hosts.
2005 Schedule
Houston (4th Annual)
October 1-2
George R. Brown Convention Center
Los Angeles (9th Annual)
October 16-17
Venue: TBA
Chicago (7th Annual)
November 12-13
Unity School, Cicero, IL
And all authors and book publishers should mark June
3, 2005 on their calendars for the 2005 Latino
Book Awards to be held in New York City
(during Book Expo America). More information on
submitting your book for consideration will be online
soon. Meanwhile you can view the winners from this
year's awards at http://
